The Traveling Lens of Jean Melesaine: From Mexico City To Cuba
Sitting in a room at customs in Cuba suspected of being a drug dealer can be a nightmare. It's something I'm used to, not a nightmare at all, just a minor bump to cross. I've never been to school to travel abroad but I've been fortunate to travel to places where people who come from where I come from, look how I look don't get to travel to these places. Which lands me to normal interrogation questions of "why and how have you traveled to this many countries?".
My favorite photographers come from Cuba, and I promised myself before I died I would make it to the island regardless of Obamas problem with socialism. With friends in Mexico and Cuba it was perfect timing to travel to a place I know of in photos and words from others.
"An image can be a phrase or a chapter, or it can be a whole book—an entire novel—or a complete fiction."-Cuban photographer René Peña
