July 4th, 2026 marked 10 years since Anthony Nuñez was shot and killed by San Jose Police Department. Anthony was 18 years old and under a mental health crisis. His close cousin called for medical help and SJPD officers shot Anthony within 3 minutes of arriving at his home.
Over the last decade Anthony’s family, community, and his parents Sandy and Jesse, have uplifted and fought for Anthony’s name and story. They were met with countless attacks from being taken advantage of in the aftermath of Anthony’s death to the City of San Jose defending killer cops in a civil trial that found them liable. Through the strength and power of Anthony’s parents, his family and community, many other families who have been affected by police violence have found support and power.
Thank you to the family for their work in our community amidst their own tragedy, for uplifting young Anthony’s name and spirit. Through these BBQs held on his angelversary, giving away backpacks, rap battles (he could flow!) we honor the kind young man he was known to be: sweet, funny, talented and generous.
