Editor's Note: Below is an anonymous testimony from a family member that saw her loved one taken by ICE from Elmwood County Jail. The testimony was read at a protest outside of Elmwood's Visitor Center, right where community members are being kidnapped by ICE. Since June 2025, 46 community members have been detained as they were being released by Elmwood to reunite with their families.
Testimony from an anonymous family member who saw her loved one being taken by ICE from the Elmwood Jail:
I was waiting for him to be released at Elmwood's parking lot. I was initially told that he would be released by 6 AM and when I went into the reception area to ask about his release, the reception person told me that his release would be until 8:30 AM that morning. I went back to my car in the parking lot to wait for the release time to arrive.
As I was waiting in the parking lot, I saw 2 vans pull up. I didn't make anything of it because I figured they were part of the jail. Around 8 AM I went back to the reception area to use the bathroom and waited for my loved one’s release. As I’m walking out of the bathroom, at the reception desk, I see ICE officers there. I see my loved one being walked out and handed over to the ICE officers, inside the reception area.
I was shocked and very emotional at what I just witnessed. Once they left, a sheriff walked out to meet me and asked why I was crying. I asked the sheriff what had happened but they said they didn't know what was going on or that they were going to be there. From my loved one’s perspective, he was told that he was going to be released with the rest of the men who were put in a holding cell to be released that morning. After everyone was put in the holding cell, he was told that he wouldn't be released with the others. That he had to hold off a little longer. That is why he was the only one walking out at 8 AM that morning.
