Editor's note: Thin Blue Lie is a series telling the stories of families who experienced the systemic police practice of coercively interrogating families moments after killing their loved ones, in an attempt to gain evidence to justify the killing. The series is made in support of new legislation AB 572 that would end this practice. In this episode of the Thin Blue Lie Series, we hear the story of families who rallied in Sacramento, CA in support of AB 572.
"AB 572 comes from the very pain and experience of what happens to many of us moments after our loved ones were assaulted or killed by police. We were coerced into interviews, withheld the status of our loved ones, robbed of the dignity of grief in our loved ones final moments. AB 572 will stop this coercive interrogative practice from harming families who lost loved ones to police violence." - Sam Sullivan, Sibling of David Sullivan, who was 19 years old when he was killed by Buena Park Police August 19, 2019.
On May 13, 2025 over 75 family members who've been directly impacted by police violence rallied at the state capitol to support #AB572, a bill aiming to end coercive interrogative practices by police departments in California. We need AB 572 to pass to prevent further trauma to families affected by police brutality.
